Fed: Aust will fail to meet greenhouse promis: Report

A leaked report has found Australia will fail to meet its promise to cut greenhousegas emissions.

Compiled for the Australian Greenhouse Office and released today by the Labor Party, the report finds the nation's greenhouse gas emissions will climb 33 per cent between1990 and 2010.

Australia had pledged under the Kyoto Protocol to limit greenhouse gas emission growthto 10 per cent.

And the report says the situation will only get worse, as the 33 per cent figure failsto take into account the impact of land clearing -- one of the biggest contributors togreenhouse gases.

Opposition environment spokesman KELVIN THOMSON says the government is sitting on thereport because it shows its failure to tackle greenhouse gas emissions.

He says the government must sign up to the Kyoto Protocol and put in place policiesto halt land clearing.

The report has found emissions have grown in all sectors, especially transport, agricultureand industry.

And it warns there will be rapid increases in emissions from coal, oil and gas fieldsbecause of planned production increases.
