Board message to kids: abstain

Sexual abstinence would get greater attention in sex-educationclasses in Chicago's public schools under changes recommendedyesterday by a Board of Education committee.

Administrators want to expand the section on abstinence in itsteacher handbook for family life and sex education.

The handbook, written in 1976, contains one paragraph onabstinence but 14 pages on other methods of birth control.

The change is a belated response to a Circuit Court order issuedin 1980 that requires the School Board to include abstinence whilecomplying with a state law that requires instruction on contraceptionas an alternative to abortion. Description changed
