Board message to kids: abstain

Sexual abstinence would get greater attention in sex-educationclasses in Chicago's public schools under changes recommendedyesterday by a Board of Education committee.

Administrators want to expand the section on abstinence in itsteacher handbook for family life and sex education.

The handbook, written in 1976, contains one paragraph onabstinence but 14 pages on other methods of birth control.

The change is a belated response to a Circuit Court order issuedin 1980 that requires the School Board to include abstinence whilecomplying with a state law that requires instruction on contraceptionas an alternative to abortion. Description changed

Government can't fix healthcare alone - ANC.(News)

The government has conceded that it cannot fix the public healthcare system on its own and that it needs help to the tune of tens of billions of rands from the private sector to refurbish the dilapidated hospital infrastructure.

Zweli Mkhize, the chairman of the ANC sub-committee on health and education, this week said …

POLLUTION LINKED TO HEART ATTACKS.(MAIN)

Byline: MARLA CONE Los Angeles Times

Even moderate air pollution routinely found in many U.S. cities may trigger sudden deaths by changing heart rhythms in people with existing cardiac problems, according to extensive new scientific research.

More than a dozen studies on humans and animals suggest that heart attacks, not lung disease, may be the most serious medical threat posed by air pollution.

The culprits appear to be tiny pieces of soot called particulates. Scientists caution that the link between heart problems and air pollution remains a strong likelihood -- not a certainty. More research is under way.

Severe particulate pollution …

The year before Columbus. ('benefits' of European civilization) (editorial)

We don't intend to celebrate the 500th anniversary of Columbus' voyage to the "New World." Our reasons become evident if we ask what the Americas were like in 1491, the year before he arrived. The land was covered by luxuriant forests and fertile plains. The lakes and rivers were as clear as wine and sun. The wildlife supported by this environment was indescribably rich. At least 50 million aboriginal people inhabited the continents, their spiritual life based on the closest possible harmony with nature. They had their choice of thousands of vegetable and animal species to form their diet. Moreover, their environment provided them with an abundance of products that were free and effective solutions to medical problems.

Striking was the tolerance of these people given the rick diversity of their religious beliefs. There were excesses, as in the case of the Aztecs …

USC Beats Mistake-Prone Oregon St. 35-10

LOS ANGELES - Southern California appeared to be eliminated from the national championship picture two weeks ago after losing at Oregon State. Two convincing victories and a series of upsets around the country since that time have thrust the Trojans back into the race.

Chauncey Washington rushed for a career-high 119 yards and three touchdowns, USC held No. 21 Oregon's explosive offense in check, and the Trojans celebrated homecoming by beating the mistake-prone Ducks 35-10 Saturday night.

The Trojans (8-1, 6-1 Pac-10) extended their winning streak at the Los Angeles Coliseum to 31 games, and Pete Carroll's teams are 18-0 in November since he became USC's coach in 2001. …

Star witness badly tarnished -- again

For 13 days, jurors in Tony Rezko's corruption trial heard testimony from a true criminal -- a con man who stole, cheated, lied, used hard-core illegal drugs and thumbed his nose at his public duties.

Just one little problem: That person is not the one on trial. He's the prosecution's star witness, Stuart Levine.

The breadth of Levine's dirty deeds, brought out in painstaking detail by defense lawyer Joseph Duffy, has thus far eclipsed what Rezko's accused of.

Moreover, Duffy has tried to show that 30 years of drug use mangled Levine's memory. His cross examination is expected to conclude early this week.

Prosecutors will then face a significant hurdle: Can …
